This program is focused on enhancing soil revitalization, preventing deforestation, and boosting agricultural productivity. It achieves these objectives by providing vermicompost (organic fertilizer) and certified Irish potato seeds to farmers. Additionally, HIHD assists smallholder farmers in planting adaptable fruit trees on their croplands and collaborates with donors to plant trees in areas damaged by mining activities, as well as regions prone to floods and erosion. Furthermore, the organization provides vegetable greenhouses, inputs, and best-practice training to vulnerable young single mothers, helping them become self-reliant.
At HIHD, our Vermicomposting Center transforms organic waste into premium organic fertilizer through the innovative use of red worms. By processing non-acidic, degradable materials, we produce nutrient-rich vermicompost that boosts soil fertility, enhances crop health, and reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers. Our eco-friendly practices not only support sustainable agriculture but also empower smallholder farmers to increase their yields while promoting environmental conservation. We are committed to creating job opportunities for vulnerable women and youth. As we expand with new centers near local waste dumpsites, we increase production capacity, lower costs, and make our vermicompost and vermiwash more accessible to farmers.
Our Aeroponic Center showcases state-of-the-art, soil-less farming techniques to grow Irish potato plantlets. In a controlled environment, these plantlets are suspended in air and misted with nutrient-rich solutions, resulting in the production of mini tubers. Each season, we generate an impressive 225,000 mini-tubers, which multiply into 75 tons of certified Irish potato seeds. These seeds are distributed to smallholder farmers, helping them improve crop yields and adopt sustainable farming practices. The center also plays a vital role in creating job opportunities for vulnerable women and youth.
HIHD proudly operates two vegetable greenhouses, providing meaningful employment for former street vendors. This initiative enables them to earn daily wages while cultivating fresh produce for sale, supporting their livelihoods and contributing to local food security.
